01Overview

A transparent bitumen buying process, from enquiry to delivered cargo

Buying bitumen internationally should be predictable. Years of trade experience have let Bitumax refine the ordering process into clear, sequential steps — so you always know what happens next, from the first enquiry to unloading at your project site.

How to Buy Bitumen, Order Process Step by Step
02The process

The bitumen buying process, step by step

Seven sequential stages carry your order from enquiry to delivery — each one owned by a named trade desk so nothing stalls between hand-offs.

01

Enquiry & Letter of Intent

The process begins with your enquiry or Letter of Intent (LOI) stating the grade, quantity, packaging and destination port required. Our trade desk helps you confirm the right penetration grade, cutback or oxidized bitumen for your climate and application.

02

Quotation (FOB or CIF)

We respond promptly with a transparent FOB or CIF quotation covering price, availability, indicative lead time and payment terms, so you can compare on a like-for-like Incoterm basis.
03

Contract & terms

Once details are agreed, we prepare a clear contract setting out pricing, quantity, specification, delivery schedule and quality standards. Fair, unambiguous terms build the foundation of a long-term supply relationship.
04

Financial arrangements

Payment is secured through your chosen instrument — Letter of Credit (LC), Telegraphic Transfer (TT) or Cash Against Documents (CAD) — giving both parties protection before the cargo is prepared for shipment.
05

Quality inspection

Before dispatch, each batch is tested and a certificate of analysis issued. Independent third-party inspection (SGS, Intertek or equivalent) can be appointed at loading so quality and quantity are verified at the port of origin.
06

Packaging & preparation

Your bitumen is prepared in the agreed format — bulk bitutainers and tankers, new steel drums or jumbo bags (FIBC) — with packaging matched to the grade and destination port handling to protect the product in transit.

07

Shipping & delivery

Logistics optimise the route and coordinate export documentation, so the cargo ships FOB or CIF and reaches your port on schedule. On arrival you can authenticate the consignment as genuine Bitumax product.

03Payment terms

Choosing a secure payment method

The three instruments buyers use most for international bitumen orders, and when each makes sense.

Letter of Credit (LC)

Bank-guaranteed, document-driven

How it works
The buyer's bank guarantees payment against compliant shipping documents.
Best for
First orders, large parcels and new trading relationships.
Buyer protection
High — funds release only when documents match the LC terms.
Typical Incoterm
CIF or FOB to a nominated port.

Telegraphic Transfer (TT)

Direct bank transfer

How it works
Payment is wired directly, often part in advance and the balance against documents.
Best for
Established relationships and faster, lower-cost settlement.
Buyer protection
Moderate — depends on the advance/balance split agreed.
Typical Incoterm
FOB or CIF, by agreement.

Cash Against Documents (CAD)

Documents released on payment

How it works
The bank releases shipping documents to the buyer only once payment is made.
Best for
Repeat buyers wanting a balance of speed and security.
Buyer protection
Moderate to high — control of cargo follows payment.
Typical Incoterm
CIF to the destination port.

06In depth

A complete guide to buying bitumen

Payment, inspection and quality assurance

Cross-border orders are secured with a Letter of Credit, Telegraphic Transfer or Cash Against Documents. Before the cargo sails, a certificate of analysis confirms the tested properties and an independent inspector — SGS, Intertek or equivalent — can verify quality and quantity at loading. On arrival you can confirm origin through product authentication, and choose the right packaging for your port handling.
