02Shipping modes

Bitumen shipping modes

Four proven modes carry bitumen to your port, each suited to a different volume, grade and handling capability.

Bulk tankers

Heated marine and road tankers move large parcels of hot bitumen cost-effectively for asphalt plants and major projects. Routes are optimised and cargo temperature monitored throughout to maintain specification on arrival.

Bitutainers

Heatable ISO-frame bitutainers combine the economy of bulk with the flexibility of containers — ideal where hot-tanker infrastructure at the destination port is limited. They load onto standard container vessels and reheat for discharge on site.

New steel drums

Palletised and secured new steel drums (around 150–180 kg net) ship in standard containers for manageable quantities and ports without bulk handling. Careful palletisation minimises damage in transit and speeds discharge.

Jumbo bags (FIBC)

Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers are palletised and loaded into containers for easy handling where manpower or hot infrastructure is limited. Loading and routing are optimised to maximise container fill and minimise cost.
03Incoterms explained

FOB vs CIF: which term is right for you

The two Incoterms buyers use most for international bitumen — who arranges freight and insurance, and where risk transfers.

FOB — Free On Board

You control the main-carriage freight

Seller arranges
Product, export packing, loading onto the vessel and export clearance at the origin port.
Buyer arranges
Ocean freight, marine insurance and import clearance at destination.
Risk transfers
When the cargo is loaded on board at the port of origin.
Best for
Buyers with their own freight contracts or preferred carriers.
Cost visibility
You see and control the freight and insurance components separately.

CIF — Cost, Insurance & Freight

We deliver to your destination port

Seller arranges
Product, export packing, loading, export clearance, ocean freight and marine insurance to destination.
Buyer arranges
Import clearance and onward inland transport from the destination port.
Risk transfers
When the cargo is loaded on board, though the seller pays freight and insurance to destination.
Best for
Buyers who want a single delivered price to their port.
Cost visibility
One all-in figure to the destination port, simpler to budget.
04Documentation & inspection

Export documentation and inspection

Every shipment travels with a complete, consistent document set, and independent inspection can be arranged at loading.

01

Certificate of analysis

Confirms the tested properties of the batch — penetration, softening point, ductility and flash point — against the agreed specification.
02

Bill of lading & packing list

The bill of lading evidences the contract of carriage and cargo receipt; the packing list details quantity, packaging and weights for customs and handling.
03

Certificate of origin

States the country of origin for import clearance and any preferential tariff treatment at destination.
04

Third-party inspection

Independent inspectors such as SGS or Intertek verify quality and quantity at the port of loading, giving you assurance before the vessel sails.

07In depth

A complete guide to bitumen logistics and shipping

FOB, CIF and the documents that move with the cargo

Incoterms decide who arranges freight and insurance and where risk transfers. Under FOB you control main-carriage freight; under CIF Bitumax delivers a single price to your port. Whichever term applies, the cargo travels with a certificate of analysis, bill of lading, packing list and certificate of origin, and independent inspection can be appointed at loading. The buying process shows how shipping fits the wider order, and product authentication lets you verify origin on arrival.
