01Overview

Packaging that protects your bitumen from refinery to site

Reliable packaging is what keeps bitumen on specification between the refinery and your project. Bitumax offers three proven formats, each built to withstand long-distance transport while preventing contamination, leakage and quality loss.

Bitumen Packaging, Bulk Drums and Jumbo Bags
02Packaging formats

Bitumen packaging formats

Three formats cover every project size and port capability, from full bulk parcels to easily handled bags.

Bulk (bitutainers & tankers)

The most cost-effective format for large asphalt plants and major projects. Heated tankers and heatable bitutainers keep bitumen fluid and on specification over long distances, cutting material handling and per-tonne cost. Bitutainers suit ports without hot-tanker infrastructure.

New steel drums

Precision-manufactured new steel drums (around 150–180 kg net) give leak-proof, secure containment for manageable quantities. Palletised for containerised shipment, they suit ports without bulk handling and improve on-site safety and stock control.

Jumbo bags (FIBC)

Woven polypropylene Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers hold substantial quantities while remaining easy to handle. They cut manual handling for sites with limited manpower or challenging conditions, and load efficiently into standard containers.

Which packaging suits your order

Match the format to your volume, port handling and grade — a quick comparison of net weight, best use and the grades each format suits.

Bulk

Bitutainers & hot tankers

Typical net weight
Full tanker / bitutainer parcels; large-tonnage lots.
Best for
Asphalt plants and major road projects with hot-handling capacity.
Suited grades
Penetration grade and viscosity grade bitumen.
Port handling
Needs heated storage or reheating for discharge.
Cost per tonne
Lowest — minimal packaging and handling.

New steel drums

≈150–180 kg net

Typical net weight
Around 150–180 kg per drum, palletised in containers.
Best for
Manageable lots and ports without bulk infrastructure.
Suited grades
Oxidized bitumen, cutback bitumen and penetration grades.
Port handling
Standard container handling; no hot infrastructure needed.
Cost per tonne
Moderate — secure, easily stored and counted.

Jumbo bags (FIBC)

Flexible intermediate bulk

Typical net weight
High-capacity woven PP bags, palletised in containers.
Best for
Flexible handling where manpower or hot infrastructure is limited.
Suited grades
Penetration and harder oxidized grades that stay solid at ambient.
Port handling
Forklift or crane; minimal manual handling.
Cost per tonne
Moderate — light packaging, easy discharge.

06In depth

A complete guide to bitumen packaging

Matching packaging to your project

Packaging is a supply-chain decision, not an afterthought. Large penetration grade bitumen and viscosity grade bitumen orders for asphalt plants move most economically in bulk, while oxidized bitumen and cutback bitumen in smaller lots suit new steel drums or jumbo bags. The right format depends on your volume and whether your port has hot-handling infrastructure.

How each format protects the product

Bulk tankers and bitutainers keep bitumen fluid and on specification; new steel drums give leak-proof, palletised containment; and jumbo bags (FIBC) combine high capacity with easy handling. Whichever you choose, the packaging works with our logistics and shipping to protect the cargo, and the buying process confirms your format at contract stage. On delivery you can verify the consignment through product authentication.
