01Overview

What is viscosity grade bitumen

Viscosity grade (VG) bitumen is classified by its absolute viscosity at 60°C, giving engineers a precise, performance-based way to select a binder. Bitumax supplies the full range of viscosity grade bitumen — VG-10, VG-20, VG-30 and VG-40 — for road construction, asphalt production and paving projects in varying climates and traffic conditions worldwide.

03Applications

Where viscosity grade bitumen is used

The performance-based binder specification used across India and increasingly worldwide, selected by viscosity to match traffic and temperature.

Dense-graded asphalt

The standard binder for bituminous concrete and dense bitumen macadam.

Heavily trafficked highways

VG-30 and VG-40 deliver the rutting resistance national highways demand.

Intersections & bus lanes

Stiffer grades handle slow, channelised and heavy loading without deformation.

Cold-climate paving

VG-10 and VG-20 maintain flexibility and resist cracking at low temperatures.

Airport pavements

Performance-graded binders selected for aircraft loading and temperature range.

Recycled & modified mixes

A consistent base binder for RAP mixes and polymer-modified formulations.

04Packaging & logistics

Packaging & logistics

Viscosity grade bitumen ships in bulk hot tankers and bitutainers, in new steel drums and in jumbo bags, with full certificates of analysis and export documentation.

Bulk

Bitutainers and hot tankers for large asphalt plants and high-volume projects.

Drummed

New steel drums for containerised shipment and smaller lot sizes.

Jumbo Bags

FIBCs for flexible handling where hot bulk infrastructure is limited.

05Buyer's guide

How to choose the right viscosity grade

VG grading lets you select a binder on performance. Match viscosity to traffic and temperature — or send your project and we'll recommend a grade.

01

Assess traffic & loading

Higher traffic and heavier axle loads call for stiffer grades — VG-30 for busy highways, VG-40 for intersections and the most demanding sites.
02

Factor in temperature

Hot climates favour VG-30 and VG-40 for rutting resistance; cold climates favour VG-10 and VG-20 to retain flexibility and resist cracking.
03

Align with the standard

Confirm the grade named in IS 73:2013, ASTM D3381 or your Superpave PG requirement and mix design.
04

Confirm packaging & Incoterms

Choose bulk, drums or bags, then request FOB or CIF pricing to your destination with lead time confirmed.
06Specs & standards

Tested to international standards

Bitumax viscosity grades are produced and certified against the performance-based specifications your projects require.

08In depth

A complete guide to viscosity grade bitumen

What viscosity grade bitumen is

Viscosity grade (VG) bitumen is paving bitumen classified by absolute viscosity at 60°C — a performance-based system that predicts how a binder behaves at real pavement temperatures. The four grades VG-10, VG-20, VG-30 and VG-40 give engineers a precise way to match a binder to traffic and climate, and VG-30 broadly corresponds to a 60/70 penetration grade.

Choosing a VG grade

Pick VG-10 for spray work and cold regions, VG-20 for cold to moderate climates, VG-30 for hot climates and busy highways, and VG-40 for intersections, toll plazas and the heaviest loading. Where your project instead specifies penetration grading, see penetration grade bitumen; for cold-applied prime and tack coats, see cutback bitumen; and for roofing or waterproofing, see oxidized bitumen.
